PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect paper sheets carried to a sending-out position and to properly and sequentially send out them. SOLUTION: A plurality of paper sheets 10 in a lot sent in a standing attitude is vacuum-suctioned one by one by a belt surface 67a of a rotating separating and supply belt 67. Underneath a separating and supply portion 63 for sending out the sheet of paper downstream by rotation of the separating and supply belt 67, there are provided an auxiliary abutting face 80 on which a lower end side portion of the paper sheet 10 abuts; auxiliary suction means 84 for vacuum-suctioning the lower end side portion of the paper sheets 10 to the auxiliary abutting face 80; and a paper sheet detecting sensor 93 for detecting arrival of the paper sheet 10 sent to the position of the belt surface 67a. A negative pressure of the auxiliary suction means 84 is measured, and when the negative pressure is not less than the predetermined value, arrival of the paper sheet 10 is determined, even if a signal of presence of the paper sheet is not outputted from the paper sheet detecting sensor 93, so that operation of sending out the paper sheets by the separating and supply part 63 is carried out.
