PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of abnormal sound and abnormal wear due to contact of a disc, armature, and a braking plate when brake is not applied. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic brake 1 is provided with a rotation part 10 rotating integrally with a braked rotary shaft 5 and a fixed part 20 which does not rotate. The rotation part has a hub 11 and a disc 12 movable in thrust direction. The fixed part has a yoke 21 and the braking plate 22 nipping the disc and an armature 23 arranged between the disc and the yoke and slidable in thrust direction. The yoke is provided with a spring 26 energizing the armature onto a braking plate side and an exciting coil 27 attracting the armature onto a yoke side against an energizing force of the spring when electricity is conducted. A spring 14 energizing the disc onto an armature side is fixed on the hub and a step difference part 11a regulating the travel of the disc onto the armature side at a predetermined position are formed as positioning means.
