PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new α-agarase useful for the production of a low molecular weight agarose oligosaccharide having an excellent physiological activity. SOLUTION: A polypeptide having a new α-agarase activity and having a loss in an amino acid sequence of a natural enzyme, a gene encoding the polypeptide, a gene engineering method for producing the polypeptide and a method for producing the agarose oligosaccharide by using the polypeptide are provided.
