<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode structure for generating pulse discharge over the whole of a honeycomb structure, in a discharge apparatus capable of efficiently decomposing a harmful substance contained in exhaust gas, which flows through the through-holes of the honeycomb structure, to a harmless substance by pulse discharge plasma generated along the through-holes. SOLUTION: The electrodes provided to both end surfaces of the electric insulating honeycomb structure are connected to a pulse power supply to generate pulse discharge plasma along the through-holes of the honeycomb structure and exhaust gas is passed through the through-holes to be reacted with high energy electrons or radicals formed in the pulse discharge plasma to decompose a harmful substance. A non-uniform electric field forming electrode, which intentionally generates non-uniform electric field distribution on at least one end surface of the honeycomb structure partially on the whole and also generates a large number of pulse streamers at the same time, is provided to at least one end surface of the honeycomb structure so as to generate discharge over the whole of the honeycomb structure.</p> |
