PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxide sintered compact completely inactive to a starting gaseous material and an objective product as a packing material used for preheating the starting gaseous material and/or for a carrier of the catalyst when the gaseous stating material is subjected to gas phase reaction by making the gaseous material to contact with a solid catalyst. SOLUTION: The oxide sintered compact obtained by adding a compound containing alkali metal element to the sintered compact containing an alkali metal element, silica and/or alumina and burning the mixture is used.
