PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost sewing machine being excellent in controllability as to the operation of preparing a bobbin thread prior to sewing, assuring the quality of sewn products, and enabling the bobbin thread to be cut without impeding sewing operation. SOLUTION: The sewing machine is provided with a bed part 1; a pedestal part 10 formed stand from one side of the bed part 1; an arm part 11 horizontally extending from the pedestal part 10 above the bed part 1; a needlebar 12 disposed below the end of the arm part 11; a cutting means 9 for cutting the bobbin thread 4 housed in the bed part 1; and switch means 8 and 9f for causing the cutting means 9 to project outside of the bed part 1 into a thread- cutting condition and for restoring the cutting means to its initial housed condition.
