Apparatus for detecting the existence of a break in textile material, e.g. a yarn 1 in a ring frame, comprises stationary transducer means 8 responsive to vibration in the material to produce electric signals and means responsive to the absence of said signals to provide an indication of the existence of a break in the material; as shown the vibrations are transmitted to the transducer via a guide 5 and support 10. A machine stop motion, a feed interrupting device or automatic rejoining device may alternatively be actuated. The transducer is preferably a multi-electrode piezo-electric crystal and its signals are passed to an amplifier. On a multi-spindle frame a single amplifier may be associated with a bank of spindles, the signals from the separate spindles being scanned in turn. Each set of amplified signals is applied to a relay such that when the signals cease a cutter severs the yarn prior to the back rollers of the drafting head associated with the broken yarn.
