A process for the production pentenoic acid esters comprises heating 3- or 4-formylvaleric acid esters at 50-450 degreesC in the presence of a supported precious metal catalyst, in mixed oxide form. A process for the production pentenoic acid esters (I) comprises heating of 3- and/or 4-formylvaleric acid esters at 50-450 degreesC in the presence of a supported precious metal catalyst, in mixed oxide form, of formula (M1)a(M2)b(M3)cPdAlcSiOx (1). M1 = alkali metal; M2 = alkaline earth metal; M3 = Group IVB metal; a = 0.5-1.5; b, c = 0.2-0.8; d = 2-8; e = 3-10; x = stoichiometric value.
