The present invention is directed to a system for removing amalgam particles and/or dissolved metals, such as mercury and silver from dental effluent (117) which consists of a three-phase mixture of gas, solids and liquid. The effluent (117) passes into vessel (104) having gas phase output line (180a) and output line (312a) for liquid and residual solids. The liquid and residual solids may pass on to one or more of a filter (309), chemical doser (304) or sorbent column (308) to remove dissolved mercury.
