Germanium sheet polymers have the germanium atoms in superimposed layers or planes. Also included are Independent claims for: (i) preparation of the polymers by topochemical conversion of CaGe2; (ii) opto-electronic elements containing the Ge polymers; (iii) sheet Si-Ge polymers with mixed planar structure; and (iv) sheet structures formed of a series of monolayers of Ge polymers and Si polymers.
