PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device which diminishes the load of the drive of a tray for transferring an optical disk between the outside of the casing and a reproducing device. SOLUTION: The optical disk device has the tray 17 which is placed with the optical disk housed in a cartridge 19 and transports the optical disk between the outside of the casing and the reproducing position and a holder 9 which holds down the cartridge 19 existing in a recording and reproducing position. The tray 17 is provided with a guide groove 17b and a first rack 17a. A slider 8 freely movably supported at the chassis 1 is provided with a shaft 8a engaging the guide groove 17b and a second rack 8b and a motor 2 fixed to the chassis 1 is provided with a gear train rotatably driven by the motor 2 fixed to the chassis 1. The first rack 17a and the second rack 8b are made meshable and disengageable with and from any gear of the gear train and the holder 9 is driven by the action of the slider 8.
