PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system and a microscope provided with the system capable of easily switching evanescent illumination and ordinary vertical illumination while using a laser beam having intensity high enough to excite fluorescence dye though an entire device is compact. SOLUTION: The laser beam emitted from a light source 1 is made incident on an optical fiber 3 through a laser beam introducing mechanism 2. The emitting end of the optical fiber 3 is connected to an adapter 4 having a fiber position adjusting knob 5. The position of the rear side focal position FB of an objective lens 7 is conjugate to the emitting end of the optical fiber 3 by a condensing lens 14 provided in a vertical illumination light projecting tube 6, and the conventional vertical illumination and the evanescent illumination are performed by moving the position of the emitting end of the optical fiber 3.
