PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an examination device for surface soil gas using a simple structure, capable of preventing collapsing of the wall of a vertical hole, and allowing economical and efficient examination work. SOLUTION: This examination device for the surface soil gas comprises a boring bar inserted into the ground and pulled out to bore the vertical hole; and a gas detection pipe or a gas suction pipe prepared in addition to the boring bar, for examining the soil gas inside the vertical hole. The boring bar comprises a boring bar body for boring the ground, and a sheath pipe shorter than the full length of the ground insertion part of the boring bar body, fitted on the periphery of the ground insertion part. The device is structured so that when the boring bar is inserted in the ground, only the boring bar body can be pulled out.
