PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of displaying a bright color picture, and at the same time, preventing a TFT(thin film transistor) from malfunctioning due to straying of incident external light from the front surface direction so as to generate no visible defect. SOLUTION: The areas of color filters 39R, 39G are made smaller than the area of a pixel region regulated by a black mask 38 comprising a metal film. A bright color picture is displayed by emitting coloring light from a region corresponding to the color filter out of the pixel region and by emitting non- coloring light with high intensity not passing through the color filter from a region without any filter. At the same time, the region corresponding to the TFT 24 arranged on the inner surface of the rear substrate 22, out of the surface of the black mask 38 opposite to the liquid crystal layer arranged on the inner surface of the front substrate 21, is covered with a light absorption layer 40. Thereby the straying light of the incident external light from the front surface direction is absorbed by the light absorption layer 40 so as to prevent the TFT from malfunctioning due to the straying light. |
