PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an internal combustion engine capable of detecting smoking dirt at a step before the internal combustion engine reaches a misfire and suppressing the reduction of operation performance of the internal combustion engine due to the occurrence of the misfire by suppressing the progress of smoking dirt at the step. SOLUTION: This controller 1 for the internal combustion engine calculates a discharge current integrated value Ii using a discharge current (secondary current i2) which is detected by detection resistance 19 connected to an ignition plug 17 in series and is generated when spark discharge occurs. When smoking dirt before the misfire occurs is detected based on the discharge current integrated value Ii, ignition time and fuel supply amount are changed so as to eliminate smoking dirt. Since smoking dirt can be early detected and the ignition plug can be early cleaned to suppress the occurrence of the misfire, the internal combustion engine can be operated in a smooth and stable condition to suppress the generation of toxic substance in exhaust gas.
