PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera that is provided with three color image pickup elements, can reduce power consumption as much as possible and can obtain a photographed image with high color reproducibility. SOLUTION: The electronic still camera 1 is provided with three color CCDs 141, 142, 143 at each pixel position of which is provided with color filters arranged in a checkered pattern at the same image positions among the CCDs, and a photographing mode setting switch 13 can set a conventional photographing mode and a high image quality photographing mode. An image processor 16 uses image data photographed only by the color CCD 141 in the usual photographing mode to generate a color photographing image with a usual image quality, and the image processor 16 uses image data photographed with the three color CCDs 141, 142, 143 in the high image quality photographing mode to generate a color photographing image with high image quality.
