PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having high practical reliability without generation of the damage of tape edges and defective envelope characteristics in a running system. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer 2 is formed on one surface of a non-magnetic substrate 1 and a back coat layer 5 is formed on the other surface of the substrate in such a manner that when the Young's modulus and the thickness of the magnetic layer 2 are defined as Em and tm, respectively and the Young's modulus and the thickness of the back coat layer 5 are defined as Eb and tb, respectively and further the stiffness Sm of the magnetic layer 2 and the stiffness Sb of the back coat layer 5 are defined as Sm=Em×tm3 and Sb= Eb×tb3, respectively, Sb/Sm is 2 or more. And if necessary a protective layer 3 and a lubricant layer 4 are provided to obtain the magnetic recording medium 10.
