PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily obtain signals for one line at a low cost and within a short developing period. SOLUTION: This image reader obtained by arranging plural line sensors for converting image pickup light to image signals in a longitudinal direction is controlled so as to drive plural line sensors, to store the image signals outputted from the line sensors and to read the stored image signals in an order different from that of the pixel array of the plural line sensors. Furthermore, the processor has plural holding means which is capable of driving the plural line sensors simultaneously and holds the outputted image signals temporarily, and an A/D conversion means for converting the image signals to digital signals. The processor has two storage means for respectively storing the image signals of the odd-numbered pixels and the even-numbered pixels of the plural line sensors. Read can be controlled to be carried out in an order reverse to that of the pixel array of the line sensors. Furthermore, the processor is controlled to read the image signals with resolution different from stored resolution.
