PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having good display characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device displaying a black color by using phase compensation has a phase compensation plate (A) produced by using a liquid crystal composition having the same temperature characteristics of birefringent refractive index n as those of a liquid crystal shutter (B). The alignment direction of the phase compensation plate (A) and the uniaxial alignment direction of the liquid crystal shutter (B) are arranged perpendicular to each other, and the uniaxial alignment of the liquid crystal shutter (B) is either parallel or antiparallel between the upper and lower substrates. The retardation R (V) of the liquid crystal shutter (B) at the voltage to display the black color and the retardation of the phase compensation plate (A) having the perpendicular alignment direction to the shutter (B) satisfy a specified condition. |
