PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display element having enhanced scattering performance without sacrificing hysteresis performance, having high contrast and excellent display quality even under high temperature. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the liquid crystal display element provided with a polymer-liquid crystal composite layer 4 held between a pair of substrates 2, 3 and electrodes 5, 7 to apply voltage to the composite layer 4 comprises a mixed composition injection step to inject the mixed composition containing a liquid crystal material and a photopolymerizable monomer between the substrates 2, 3, the first ultraviolet rays irradiation step to irradiate the mixed composition with the ultraviolet rays with the first ultraviolet rays intensity so as to phase separate the polymer and the liquid crystal and simultaneously to make the shapes of the separated and deposited liquid crystal droplets 10 be nearly spherical and the second ultraviolet rays irradiation step to irradiate the unreacted polymerizable monomer remaining inside the liquid crystal droplets with the ultraviolet rays with the second ultraviolet rays intensity weaker than the first ultraviolet rays intensity so as to further polymerize the monomer.
