PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve performance of a circularly polarizing plate. SOLUTION: In the polarizing plate comprising a linearly polarizing film and an optically anisotropic layer, the slow axis of the optically anisotropic layer measured at 400 nm wavelength and that measured at 700 nm wavelength are made essentially to intersect perpendicularly with each other. Both slow axes are made to be in directions different from the direction of the polarized light transmission axis of the linearly polarizing film.
