PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact projection type display device. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a light source 101 constituted of a lamp 101a and a concave mirror 101b, image forming elements 111R, 111G and 111B forming an image by modulating and emitting illuminating light from the light source 101, a projection optical system 112 projecting the image of the image forming element, diverging optical systems 103 and 104 arranged on the emitting side of the light source 101 and diverging the outermost peripheral luminous flux of the illuminating light from the light source, and a converging optical system 105 having a larger effective diameter than the optical system 103 or the like and converging the outermost peripheral luminous flux of the light emitted from the optical system 103 or the like and emitting it to the image forming element.
