PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission for an automobile capable of smoothly conducting changeover from an automatic gear shifting mode to a manual gear shifting mode and shifting operation. SOLUTION: An up-shift switch 19 and a down-shift switch 20 are made to have a forced changeover function for conducting changeover from automatic gear shifting to manual gear shifting. The up-shift switch 19 is made to have a target gear change ratio setting function for setting a smaller gear change ratio of manual gear change ratio analogous to a gear change ratio set by the automatic gear shifting mode as a target gear change ratio. Therefore, by one operation of the up-shift switch 19 or the down-shift switch 20, changeover from automatic gear shifting to manual gear shifting and up-shifting/down- shifting are simultaneously conducted, thereby improving operability in mode changing and shift operation.
