PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability and the like without generating of the wear of a magnetic head and the corrosion of a magnetic layer or the like at the time of production and use. SOLUTION: The magnetic layer 2 is formed on a non-magnetic substrate 1 and a carbon film 4 containing nitrogen and having a ratio B/A of the peak intensity B of a peak existing in the vicinity of 1,540 cm-1 wavelength to the peak intensity A obtained by subtracting fluorescence intensity by a Gaussian function in a Raman spectrum of the carbon film of 17 or more is formed on the magnetic layer 2. A lubricant layer 5 is formed on the carbon film 4 and if necessary a back coat layer 6 or a metal thin film is formed on the surface on the side opposite to the side on which the magnetic layer 2 of the non-magnetic substrate 1 is formed.
