The architecture of an intelligent transceiver (e.g. set-top box) includes a plurality of modular functional blocks. One of the functional blocks is a front-end block (310) comprising an integrated circuit device (405) configured for bi-directional communication. In one embodiment, the front-end block also includes an in-band tuner (401) for receiving in-band digital signals from the digital broadcast system, an out-of-band tuner (402) for receiving out-of-band digital signals from the digital broadcast system, and a cable modem (403) for sending outgoing digital signals to and receiving incoming digital signals from the digital broadcast system. Thus, the devices necessary for bi-directional communication are located within a single block (e.g. the front-end block). Other functional blocks included in the intelligent transceiver are a conditional access block (330), an audio/video decoder (340), a graphics block (350) and a central processing unit (360).
