The device has a very elastic rubber band (5) and two alignment plates, each with at least one clamp device, to tension the rubber band. The plates (2) have a vertical alignment edge for comparison with the standing or tile surface, at least in use. At least two clamp devices are provided. The walls of the plates may have clamp tongues formed as bent U-shaped cut-outs from the plates and arranged at equal heights up the plates.
