<p>A rare earth doped optical fiber (12) having an input end (14) and an output end (16), a first pump laser (18) for generating a first pump light having a particular wavelength, a second pump laser (46) for generating a second pump light having a different wavelength than the first pump light, a first multiplexer (22) having a first input port (24), a second input port (26) and an output port (28), a second multiplexer (50) having a first input port (52), a second input port (54), and an output port (56), and a multiplexer/demultiplexer (30) having two input ports (32, 34) and two output ports (36, 38). The pump (18, 46) simultaneously and codirectionally co-pump power into the input end of the rare earth doped optical fiber amplifier (12) in the same direction as the signal traverses the amplifier (10).</p> |
