A process for the production of optically active beta -amino alcohols of the general formula (II) which comprises treating an enantiomeric mixture of an alpha -aminoketone of the general formula (I) or a salt thereof with at least one microorganism selected from the group consisting of those belonging to the genus Morganella and so on to form a beta -amino alcohol having a desired optical activity in a high yield with high selectivity.
