A roof rack system for a vehicle has fixed side railings (4, 5) and at least two removable roof bars (7) which are fitted across the side railings and secured to same. The rear load space of the vehicle, e.g. a hatchback or estate car shape, has grooves into which the roof bars can be stored. The grooves have front pockets into which the front ends of the roof bars are secured. The rear ends of the bars are secured by fasteners.
