Process for purifying and disinfecting cooling lubricants (K) comprises removing the impurities in the form of free oil and solid particles in a pre-separator (2); feeding the purified cooling lubricant to a fine separator (8); feeding the practically oil-free purified cooling lubricant to a collecting vessel (6) and then through a UV flat bed reactor (12) whilst adding an oxidizing material at the inlet to the reactor. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The germination index, the nitrate content, the pH value and the refractive index of the cooling lubricant is determined in the collecting vessel and the addition of the oxidizing material at the inlet to the reactor is controlled depending on the determined germination index. The film thickness of the cooling lubricant and its flow speed is controlled depending on the value of the germination index and the refractive index.
