The method involves transmission of packets of digital words across a network. The digital information packets have a virtual channel containing routing information which can be set to indicate congestion along a transmission path. Each node in the network has a register which detects whether a FIFO register is full or empty. If the register is full, the virtual channel is set, and the message passed back to the transmitting node to set this node to a congested state as well. This results is the digital transmission being routed to an uncongested path.
