A method for operating a device for producing hydrogen for use in a fuel cell system for electric power generation, which comprises stopping the device by a procedure wherein the flow rate of a hydrocarbon fuel is gradually reduced and simultaneously the flow rate of water is gradually increased, while maintaining the flow rate of an oxidizing gas at a constant level, and water and the oxidizing gas are stopped after the hydrocarbon fuel is stopped. The method allows the avoidance of the deactivation of a catalyst due to the increase of its temperature beyond the limitation of heat resistance, the danger of the formation of a mixture of a hydrocarbon fuel as a raw material with an oxidizing gas containing oxygen, and the like, which may be caused when flow rates of the hydrocarbon fuel, the water and the oxidizing gas are randomly reduced.
|
