The monitoring method has the radiation emitted by the elongate light source (18) of the lamp unit (2) blocked and the quantity of reflected radiation which passes through an opening (16) in a rear reflector enclosing the elongate light source is measured, e.g. via a UV monitor positioned above the lamp unit. An Independent claim for a lamp unit is also included.
