The method involves dividing the functionality of the subscriber connection of a conventional telephony connection for embedding in the SDSL transmission system so that time-critical components are conducted in the network termination unit (NT). A conventional telephony connection is controled using operating control bits independent of the channel used; by selecting suitable signaling elements a very small bandwidth is used for signaling.
