Preparation of phosphinic acids comprises reacting an alkali-phosphinate with an inorganic mineral acid in a polar solvent, then separating the phosphinic acid. An Independent claim is included for use of the phosphinic acids produced in the preparation of flame retardants, plant protectants and extraction agents.
