The invention aims at providing a process for the preparation of artepillin C compounds by efficient and safe organic synthesis. The aim is achieved by providing novel phenol derivatives useful as raw material for the preparation of artepillin C compounds, a process for the preparation of the derivatives, and a process for preparing artepillin C compounds via the step of reacting the phenol derivative with acrylic acid or an ester thereof.
