The restraint device has a roller housing, receiving a retractable retaining mesh (18,19,20) attached to a spring-loaded roller shaft, which is secured to the top rear edge of a rear passenger seat (11,12). The extended retaining mesh is secured to a fixing rail (H) adjacent the roof of the passenger compartment in either the upright or fold-down position of the seat backrest (15,16,17).
