A low-profile illuminator (6) comprises a transparent plate (1) carrying an array of rearward facing light sources (2) mounted on the rear of the plate (3), combined with an array of concave reflectors (4) located adjacent to the rear surface of the plate and arranged to collect light from the light sources and reflect the collected light back through the transparent plate. The illuminator may be used to back-illuminate a sign or display or it may be operated as a light source to illuminate objects at a distance. A feature of the design is that the beam from the illuminator may be narrowly convergent or broadly diverging dependent on the arrangement of the construction parameters. |
