<p>1,094,771. Gauze catalyst support. MONSANTO CO. Jan. 1, 1965 [Jan. 2, 1964], No. 154/65. Heading B1F. Gauze catalysts, e.g. of Pt or Pt-Rh, are supported across a reactor by means of a grate consisting of ceramic block in turn supported on, but in spaced relation to, a floor extending across the reactor. The blocks provide a uniform pattern of gas-distribution channels across the reactor and the channels provide at the catalyst supporting surface an open cross-sectional area greater than 50% of the total cross-sectional area of the reactor. The blocks preferably provide contact areas with the gauze 20, Fig. 5, which are in the form of long narrow areas provided by upstanding ribs 11, which may be straight or regularly or irregularly curved. The blocks may comprise feet 12 which rest on the floor. In the described embodiment the blocks are arranged so that the ribs 11 on adjacent blocks are at right angles and further honeycomb structure blocks 3 are placed thereupon to form the immediate support for the gauze. The blocks are preferably made of alumina, and the whole assembly is kept in place in the reactor above the floor by means of a metal sealing ring 22. The apparatus may be employed in the production of HCN from NH 3 and CH 4 (natural gas) and air at 1100-1500‹C.</p> |
