PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method of manufacturing an electrode wire for wire electric discharge machining that is inexpensive in production cost and can reliably produce a Cu-Zn alloy layer with a desirable Zn concentration. SOLUTION: A core wire material 1 is externally coated in a Zn layer 2 and furthermore externally coated in a Cu-Zn alloy layer 3, before wiredrawing followed by heat treatment of diffusing Zn in the Zn layer 2 into the Cu-Zn alloy layer 3 to increase the Zn concentration of the Cu-Zn layer 3 to a desirable one. The Cu-Zn alloy layer with the desirable Zn concentration is thus obtainable reliably and manufacturable through en bloc heat treatment, so that an electrode wire for wire electric discharge machining with appreciable productivity, high- speed machining quality and the like can be easily obtained.
