A safety belt 2 comprises a fold in its length to provide layers 4, 5 and 6 which are sewn together by parallel rows of frangible stitching which ruptures upon sudden movement of the vehicle. The stitches vary in strength either by using threads of different tensile strength or by varying the size of the stitches. The rows of stitching 7, 7<SP>1</SP> are the weakest. The rows of stitches 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and 10 may pass through only two layers 5, 6.
