PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smaller-sized and low-cost paper detector capable of detecting both paper sheets to be supplied from a paper feeding carrier passage in a printer and paper sheets to be returned from a reversing carrier passage. SOLUTION: This paper detector comprises a main lever 3, to which self- resetting habit for standing attitude is granted, pivotally supported to be rotatable only in the direction of the positive feed of paper sheets and an auxiliary lever 4, to which self-resetting habit for standing attitude is granted, pivotally supported at the end thereof to be rotatable only in the direction of the reverse feed of the sheets. The paper detector 2 has the auxiliary lever normally protruded into a common carrier passage 72 for a combined part 73 of the feeding carrier passage 71 and the looped reversing carrier passage 81.
