PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve storing and retrieving capability, especially retrieving capability and to integrate an automatic sorting apparatus, in an automatic warehouse system having a plurality of stage of rotary racks consisting of a plurality of racks accommodating containers for housing parts therein, and a storing elevator and a retrieving elevator for conveying containers between the stage for storing and retrieving the parts in the container and the rack part accommodating other containers. SOLUTION: Two groups of storing elevators and retrieving elevators are installed at prescribed intervals, and each of the group conducts storing and retrieving the container. An automated storage and retrieval controller is provided with a table capable of setting the respective racks of the respective stages and the number of the containers accommodated therein to an arbitrary relation to control a carried-in container so that it may be allocated to an empty rack at the shortest moving distance.
