PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical unit which can form a color image having no color shift. SOLUTION: In a tandem scanning optical unit, the charge transport layer in photosensitive drums 51-54 for respective color components is formed of a first CTL 5c having sensitivity in a first wavelength and a second CTL 5d having sensitivity in a second wavelength. Scanning lines of identical shape are formed on respective photosensitive drums 51-54 by means of a laser beam L of second wavelength. Furthermore, entire region of scanning lines is irradiated intermittently with light of first wavelength from each modulation light source E1-E4. Since the first CTL 5c and the second CTL 5d become conductors on each photosensitive drum 51-54 at the spot positions of laser beams L1-L4 at a moment when the modulation light sources E1-E4 are turned on. Consequently, previously imparted surface charges are lost and an electrostatic image is formed.
