PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binder for hydraulic composition as a combination of a water-soluble cellulose ether with a long-chain alkylbenzenesulfonic acid or a salt thereof, thus affording a hydraulic composition incorporated therewith with good plasticity in an addition amount of the water-soluble cellulose ether less then the case with using the water-soluble cellulose ether singly. SOLUTION: This binder for hydraulic composition is characterized by comprising a combination of a water-soluble cellulose ester with a long-chain alkylbenzenesulfonic acid or a neutral salt thereof.
