Carbon or carbon-based cathodes and cell bottoms of electrolytic cells for t he production of aluminium in particular by the electro lysis of alumina in a molten halide electrolyte such as cryolite, are treated to b etter resist intercalation of sodium in the cell operat ing conditions by impregnation and/or coating with colloidal alumina ceria, cerium acetate, silica, alumina, lithia, yttria, thoria, zirconia, magn esia or monoaluminium phosphate followed by drying and heat treatment.
