PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of ear cracking at the time whenδferrite- containing austenitic stainless steel is processed in hot rolling by forming a build-up layer in which the contents of C and Cr are controlled on the side face of a slab. SOLUTION: As this stock for hot rolling, a build-up layer with a thickness of >=4 mm is formed on the side face of an austenitic stainless steel slab containing, 7 to 16 mass % Ni and 16 to 26% Cr and containingδferrite of 10 to 30 vol.%, and, in the surface layer part within a range of 1 mm from the surface of the build-up layer, the content of Cr is controlled to <=3.0%, and the content of C to <=0.15%. When the stock is subjected to hot rough rolling, the breadthwise reduction is preferably set to >=3 mm.
