<p>Trioxane is copolymerized at 50 DEG to 150 DEG C., using a cationically-active catalyst, with 0.5 to 50% of a cyclic nitrogen compound of formula <FORM:1018449/C3/1> in which R2 may be the same or different and is hydrogen, a C1- 6 alkyl, or a C1- 6 haloalkyl and R1 is a C1- 6 alkyl, a C6- 20 aryl or a C6- 20 alkaryl and n is 1, 2, or 3. Other cyclic compounds containing an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom may also be present. The catalyst may be a strong mineral acid, a sulphonic acid, a Lewis acid, a boron halide etherate or a halogenous organoaluminium compound. The copolymerization may take place in bulk, solution or suspension in aliphatic, aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbons. Specified cyclic nitrogen compounds are 1-3-bis-methanesulphonyl-imadazolidine or -hexahydropyrimidine, 1-3-bis-(2-benzenesulphonyl - imidazoline or hexahydropyrimidine, 1 - 3 - bis - dodecylsulphonyl imidazolidine and 1 - 3 - bistoluenesulphonyl imidazolidine.</p> |
