1,018,595. Moulding intermeshing helical coils. TALON Inc. April 2, 1964 [April 15, 1963], No. 13757/64. Heading B5A. A machine which forms a pair of intermeshed helical coils from synthetic resin filamentary material such as nylon, the coils being particularly intended for use in a sliding clasp fastener, comprises a pair of heads 6, Fig. 3, which each rotate relative to an axial mandrel 8 whereby filaments F are wound into coils about the mandrels, and means to effect intermeshing of the coils adjacent the free ends of the mandrels. In operation, the filaments F are nipped between elements 7 at the extremities of the heads 6 to produce deformations H, Fig. 6 (not shown), which provide interlocking means for the coils, the coils then progressing along the mandrels 8 as the heads 6 rotate to be entrained by position-adjustable toothed-wheels 42 which accurately space the convolutions of the coils relative to one another and cause intermeshing thereof. From wheels 42 the intermeshed coils pass to a wheel 51, Fig. 2 (not shown), and are forced into a peripheral groove thereof by a pressure roller 76. The coils are maintained within the wheel 51 by a metal band 75 which passes over rollers 74 and moves with the wheel, and are heated by heaters 54 to relieve tension in the filaments. Finally the coils are delivered to a cooled guide 90 after being stripped from the wheel 51 by a flexible band 55. Modifications include lengthened and angled mandrels 8, Fig. 7 (not shown), and means for facilitating the moving of the coils from the free ends of the mandrels 8 to the wheel 51, Figs. 8-10 (not shown).
