Formylmethylene phthalimidines of formula (I): (where R1 and r2 are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residue and R2 may also be H or alkoxy) are obtd. by reacting phthalimidine cpds. of formula: with reaction product of formamides of formula: (where R3 and R4 are aliphatic or aromatic residue or R3 and R4 together with adjacent nitrogen may be a member of a heterocycle) and an acid halide in presence of organic solvents, and following hydrolysis of the reaction product. - Pref. products are cpds. (I) where R1 and R2 are alkyl (1-6C), cycloalkyl (=80C), aralkyl (=10C), phenyl or naphthyl, and R2 may also be alkoxy (=6C) or H, any of which grps. may be substd. by e.g. alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, nitro, anilino, dialkylamino, chlorine or bromine.
